Men’s Mental Health Signs May Be Different Than What You Think
“Therapy offers a uniquely confidential space where we don't have to worry about judgment, labeling, or any social consequences from friends or family,” says Amber
Jeff’s story
Jeff’s wife was upset with him, she wanted him to be there, to be a family, to help with the kids. Although his job required him to be away, it gave Jeff the opportunity to take good financial care of his family, and he enjoyed the work. Even though it met some important needs, it also created some problems. His relationship with his wife was deteriorating, and he felt increasingly distant from his kids. While his job made it possible for them to play hockey and soccer, he wasn’t there in time to coach them. Other relationships were beginning to breakdown including an argument with his boss. The compounded pressure was too much, and Jeff relapsed. Fortunately, Jeff recognized that in order to keep himself on track he needed to go to therapy.
“Men feel stresses and pressures as women do, but they express them differently,” says Amber Jerome, Registered Clinical Councilor at As You Are Therapy & Consulting. “Anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorders commonly affect both men and women, but men have higher rates of addictions and suicide. Recognizing the signs of mental health distress are key to getting men the support they need.”
Although, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, men are 14% less likely to seek mental health supports than women. There are a number of factors that contribute to this disparity for men, such as upholding the traditional norms of strength, toughness, and self-reliance, as well as lack of self-awareness, reluctance to discuss problems, embarrassment, and shame. Destigmatizing and normalizing seeking help would go a long way to helping men…

It can help you better manage how you cope with life stressors to enhance your daily functioning.
-
We are client-centered which means, we take our cues and direction about how therapy unfolds from you. At times, therapy will be uncomfortable and this is where growth happens. We believe in being real and transparent, this will sometimes include some laughs and hearing the hard things.
-
Your first session is an opportunity to know each other better and explore how to reach your goals, or we can dive right into why you came to therapy in the first place. It’s up to you!
-
Our hope is that every therapy session will provide valuable insight, resources, and tools to help you get closer to reaching your goals in life.
Depending on the goals you have and the challenges you are navigating, some people will be in therapy regularly for a longer period of time, some may check in infrequently, and some may feel like they have what they need after a few sessions.
Our goal is never to have people in therapy every week forever, we want people to gain skills and practice them in the world without us and come back when they need support.
-
We offer both virtual and in-person walk and talk sessions. We want you to be in your own safe space while working through the ‘tough’ stuff. For local clients (Calgary and Chestermere), there are options for walk and talk sessions. These sessions occur in nature (parks, walking paths, trails etc.) where we conduct a therapy session while walking together. Some people find this to be an easier way to work through their tough stuff. These sessions are weather dependent.
